NAIDOC Week Celebrations at Redeemer

At Redeemer, we have started Term 3 by celebrating NAIDOC Week! Below are some reflections of the celebrations:

In 5KL for NAIDOC Week we read stories and watched videos about why we remember and celebrate NAIDOC Week.

We learnt about First Nations culture and history, listened to Indigenous music and viewed artworks. As a class we coloured in parts of a NAIDOC Week poster with Indigenous patterns and designs. We then put the poster together and displayed it in our classroom.

Six of our students also attended the NAIDOC for Jajumms event, organised by the Our Nangara Group.

They experienced a warm Welcome to Country and enjoyed indigenous dance and singing performances. We participated in various hands-on activities including clay stamping, rock painting and scratch art. We also learned about how Indigenous people identified birds and other animal by competing in a feather identification competition. This community event was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about and connect with First Nations people, celebrating the rich culture and heritage of First Nations children and communities.

Our Year 3 students learned about Aboriginal History and engaged in creative activities with what they had learnt!

Year 2 celebrated NAIDOC week with the theme of "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud" by creating our own campfire artwork.

Students decorated a hand with traditional indigenous colours which was then glued together to symbolise the flames of a fire. We also enjoyed reading and sharing stories that acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history.

Year 1 learned about Australia through a tacticle tabletop activity!
