Redeemer's Science Week for 2024 was a resounding success, offering students a wide range of engaging activities that brought the wonders of science to life! From wildlife encounters to astronomy nights, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Monday: A Close Encounter with Australian Wildlife
The week kicked off with an Australian wildlife encounter that captivated students of all ages. Snakes, lizards, alligators, and bearded dragons made their way to campus, providing an up-close and personal look at some of Australia’s most fascinating creatures. Students marvelled at the unique adaptations of these animals while learning about their habitats and behaviours.
Tuesday: Magic Meets Science and Paper Helicopters Take Flight
On Tuesday, the younger students in Years 1 to 3 were treated to a special "Science is Magic" show presented by our very own STEAM ambassadors. The performance combined the mystery of magic with the principles of science, leaving the audience in awe. Meanwhile, in SB7, students had the chance to craft and test their own paper helicopters. The event was a hit, with students eagerly experimenting to see whose helicopter would fly the furthest or spin the longest.
Thursday: STEM Trivia Challenges Minds
Thursday saw the Innovation Hub Café transform into a battleground of wits as students gathered for a STEM trivia competition. Teams competed fiercely, answering questions that tested their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The event was both fun and educational, encouraging students to think critically and work together.
Friday: Mini Catapults, Dry Ice Ice Cream, Medicine and Stargazing
Friday was packed with activities. Students in Years 4, 5, and 6 took on the challenge of building mini catapults, applying principles of physics and engineering to launch projectiles across the classroom. Meanwhile, senior students were treated to a special edition of Frappe Friday, featuring fizzy and creamy dry ice ice cream. At just $2.00 per 100ml, the tasty treat was a hit, with all proceeds going to the Queensland Koala Society.
On Friday, during their Learning Mentor Time (LMT) Senior School students had the opportunity to hear from Professor Ung, a renowned breast and endocrine surgeon, who shared insights into his journey and achievements in the field of medicine.
The week culminated in an Astronomy Night on the Fred Davey Oval, where approximately 10 families gathered to gaze at the stars. Armed with a sense of wonder and support from Stewart – the astronomer, participants explored the night sky, delving into the mysteries of deep space.
National Science Week 2024 at Redeemer was an unforgettable experience, sparking curiosity and a love for learning in students across all year levels. The diverse range of activities ensured that everyone had the opportunity to engage with science in a fun and meaningful way.
A big thank you to all the Science teachers, STEAM and Science ambassadors who organised and supported this week’s activities. We can’t wait to bring you even more exciting events for National Science Week in August 2025!
