Recently the Year 10 and 11 Construction students visited the Cross River Rail Experience Centre where they learnt about the Cross River Rail project and its progress. They learnt about all the different trades and professions that have come together to make this project possible. Students learnt how their construction studies link to so many career pathways ranging from trades to para-professional and professional roles. They met alumni Kelly Fraser (Class of 2015), who is currently studying at university and involved in the Cross River Rail project.
We thank Construction Skills Queensland for facilitating this great experience and supporting our students' learning.
Eugene Wong - "It was a pleasant time to visit the Cross River Rail Experience Centre and the actual construction site at Roma St, even though this was my second time to be in the centre and we couldn't go inside the tunnel. Throughout the excursion, I have learnt the main objective of commencing the Cross River Rail project and the beneficial impact to the society in the future. I have also understood the importance of the construction industry, where there are multiple careers involved, such as concreters, drillers, crane operators, etc, to form a future for communities. Living in a society where construction industries play a crucial part in the community, it is vital for people to understand their roles and purposes. I am looking forward to this project as it brings more frequent public transport services, advanced technologies and infrastructures."
Dean Thurstun - "I enjoyed the excursion to the Cross River Rail experience centre and the Roma Street construction site. Learning about the process of planning and construction was very interesting. We even got to see some rock samples from the different construction sites. At the Roma Street construction site we got to wear the hard hats, other PPE and watch a crane move a frame in to position for concreting. It was a great experience learning about many different jobs I had never heard of, like a dogger."
Angelo Szetu - "I really enjoyed the interaction center as it gave us a great overview of the Cross River Rail plans and informed us about the variety of career choices in construction. It was great to have the opportunity to visit the construction site of the Cross River Rail project, giving us an idea of what it is like to work on such a big project and what is expected on a site. Unfortunately, we didn't get the chance to enter the tunnel, but overall the experience was good."
Ethan Speldewinde - "I enjoyed watching the construction site and seeing what the workers were doing. Also hearing about how people got into the industry was helpful. Something I would have wanted to do is go into the site and take an in-depth look at what the workers were doing."
Oziah Pukallus - "I enjoyed the cross-river rail excursion as we got to enter a live construction site. I also enjoyed the interactive visitor centre."
Rhys Wood - "I really enjoyed learning about the various components of the Cross River Rail and watching the construction process take place."
